Most stages are designed to stay still. Show automation is for the moments when they need to move: a product reveal, a performer lift, a rotating platform, a tracking LED screen, or a scenic element opening on cue.


Done well, the audience reads it as magic. Backstage, it is a controlled system doing exactly what it was designed, tested and told to do.

The Simple Definition


Show automation is the controlled movement of stage, scenic, screen or performance elements during a live event.


That movement might come from motors, lifts, tracks, turntables, actuators, winches or custom-built reveal mechanisms. It may be triggered manually, linked to show control, or cued alongside lighting, video and audio. The equipment changes from project to project, but the goal stays the same: safe, repeatable movement at the right moment.

When Manual Movement Is Not Enough


Not every moving effect needs automation. If an element is light, low-risk and easy for crew to move cleanly, manual operation may be the better answer.


Automation becomes important when the movement is too heavy, too visible, too precise, too risky or too closely tied to the show cue. Performer lifts, product reveals, rotating stages, moving LED screens, scenic doors, kinetic props and opening ceremony moments all need more control than “someone push it from backstage.”


Before approving any moving element, the team needs to know exactly what moves, what it weighs, how far it travels, how it stops, who operates it and what happens if something fails.


That last question matters most. Power can drop. Signals can fail. Cues can shift. People can stand in the wrong place. A good automation plan includes the safety layer, the emergency stop, the reset process and, where needed, a manual fallback.

Why It Cannot Be an Afterthought


Automation needs space. Motors, tracks, access panels, control logic, power routes and backup operation all have to fit somewhere. The stage structure, scenic design, rigging plan and rehearsal schedule also need to allow for the movement.


This is why automation should be discussed while the creative idea is still being shaped. It is more efficient, cleaner and safer to design the movement in from the start as part of the creative show development than to force it into a finished set.
